About

GlobalSight

GlobalSight is an Open-Source Translation Management System (TMS) that includes a highly-scalable translation memory and terminology database, a configurable workflow engine, an online translation workbench, and integration with offline translation tools such as Trados.  GlobalSight can be used to synchronize multilingual web sites and translate large volumes of technical documentation.

History

In 1997 GlobalSight, a Seattle-based international web development company, introduced a new software tool called Ambassador Suite.  This suite allowed webmasters to generate multilingual sites while managing them in only one language.

For the next several years, Ambassador grew from a platform to develop and maintain multilingual websites, to a complete Translation Management System (TMS) that automated the localization process, leveraged previously translated material and managed the translation process in a collaborative environment.  In 2005, Transware acquired the GlobalSight Ambassador product and subsequently developed it into a scalable internet-based (ASP) product.

In the latest release, Ambassador 6.8 improved upon earlier editions by offering customers an advanced customizable workflow engine that can connect to internal content or document management system software, customizable word count analysis, side-by-side review functionality at the file and segment levels with full comment threading and management, and a new reporting engine for flexible reporting on volume, costing and efficiency.  Transware offered Ambassador as part of their Transware services, with no enterprise licenses or software maintenance.

Over $50 million dollars has been invested in the GlobalSight product since its start as the first translation management system.  In May 2008, Welocalize, a leading provider of integrated globalization services, inherited this solid technology with the acquisition of Transware.

In July 2008, Welocalize established the GlobalSight Open Source initiative that aims to drive the development of GlobalSight Ambassador through open collaboration.  In this non-captive community, participants are free to discuss, discover and build upon a translation process automation tool that provides choice and flexibility―and can be shared by all.  On January 6, 2009, Welocalize released GlobalSight 7.1, the new open-source version of the enterprise-class Translation Management System (TMS).  With zero license fees, the open-source GlobalSight TMS provides a low-risk, flexible and sustainable globalization platform at a fraction of the cost of closed-source TMS products in the market today.  For more information and to join the community, please visit www.globalsight.com.
